If you’ve taken the leap and decided to give wild camping a shot, then you’re probably wondering where the best places are to start.

It seems simple enough — head out on your hike, and when you get tired, pitch the tent. But there are certain rules and guidelines to follow when wild camping, and those we’ve covered elsewhere on the Camping Things blog. Getting the most out of your wild camping trip, and making sure you don’t get into trouble, requires that you spend a bit of time researching the best and most beautiful UK wild camping sites.

Fortunately, we’ve done a lot of the leg work for you, so all you’ve got to do is choose where you’d like to set up camp, and what you’d like to bring along for dinner.

A word on wild camping

Wild camping is the funner, more real alternative to traditional, regulated campsite camping. It involves pitching your tent in the actual great outdoors (up a mountainside or in a valley), with none of the amenities usually afforded to those camping out of the back of the car.

Here are a few of our favourite wild camping spots, mixed in with a few we’ve gathered from some very reliable sources and friends of Camping Things.

Dartmoor

This is one of our favourite UK wild camping sites and one of the only places in Great Britain to legally recognise wild camping. In many other places, wild camping isn’t strictly illegal, but it can be frowned upon for safety reasons, or for trespassing reasons etc.

The stunning natural scenery around Dartmoor make it the perfect place to explore, pitch and relax. The open, natural space around Dartmoor does come with a certain risk, however, in the form of the army firing test grounds. If you are going to be hiking around the area, heed the warning signs, and stay away from anywhere you’re not supposed to be.

The Lake District

A popular destination for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers from all around the country, if you can find the right spot, the Lake District is a beautiful place for wild camping. You’ll need to be careful about where you set up, so as not to upset your fellow adventurers, and make sure you’re not on anyone’s property.

Forest walks are particularly lovely, and if you’re willing to take it off the beaten track, then pitching your tent up one of the Lake District’s fine mountains is a great way to experience the area and wild camping.

The Hebrides

Head up Scotland and take in the fresh air north of the border. The Hebrides, along with the Eastern shores of Loch Lomond are stunning places to set up camp. If you are going to venture all the way out to the Hebrides, then be careful, because there’s not much there in the way of comforts and safety. Best left for experienced hikers and wild campers, that one, but if you’re up for it, the rewards can be outstanding in terms of view and how small the place makes you feel.

Other places in Scotland worth a look include any of the country’s fine glens, and the Falls of Falloch.

For Wales, check out the Clun Gwyn waterfalls near Ystradfellte.

UK Wild Camping Sites

Turner Hall Farm, Seathwaite, Duddon Valley, Cumbria

There’s a pub close by, but don’t think for a minute that this part of the Lake District is a tourist trap. There are no official pitching points here, but you can set up camp as long as you’re responsible, and then you’re free to enjoy the scenery.

Blackberry Wood, South Downs, Sussex

Sufficiently wild and out of the way, Blackberry Wood is a haven for wild campers. It remains as one of the few places in Britain that still give you a feeling of the good old days. Highly recommended for a peaceful wild camping trip. One of a few family UK wild camping sites we’d recommend.

Back of Beyond Touring Park, Dorset

While not technically wild camping, Back of Beyond is sufficiently open and tranquil enough to give you the feeling of being out in the wild. It’s a regulated site with a difference. Owner operated, only 80 pitches are allowed over the entire area, and there’s plenty of room for everyone.

Horgabost, Isle of Harris, Outer Hebrides, Scotland

With enough space to guarantee privacy even when there are other people around, you’ll be pinching yourself once you set foot in this, one of Scotland’s most unbelievably beautiful areas. White sands and clear blue water meet, to give the impression of a hidden beach right out of your favourite book.

Torridon Camp Site, north-west Scotland

Flanked on either side by the slopes of Liathach, Torridon is a campsite, but it’s so remote and so responsibly camped on, that you get the sense of being isolated in the best possible way. All that, plus you get the luxury of being able to use the nearby toilets and showers. A great option for those of you in search of a semi-wild camping trip experience.

Gwern Gof Uchaf, Snowdonia, North Wales

With breathtaking views and enough terrain to keep you busy for far longer than you could walk, this lovely area of North Wales cries out for wild campers. Plus, if you feel like tackling Snowdonia, it’s close enough to pack up your stuff and head out for the hike of a lifetime.

Wild Camping Lizard, Helston, Cornwall

It may be a campsite and not technically wild camping in the sense that we’ve been talking about it, but with access to the most southerly point on the British mainland, who are you to complain?

Welsummer Camping, Harrietsham, Kent

Another one which feels sufficiently remote, while still retaining one or two things which might come in handy, like the nearby shop selling locally produced organic goods. Welsummer Camping’s offering is sympathetic to both the wild camper, and the almost-wild camper on the lookout for something in between.

Why is so hard to find good remote camping sites? The truth is, it’s not. They’re everywhere. Part of the fun is finding them yourself. We’ve laid out a few where you can go to try out wild camping, and they are great choices, places where you’ll be left in peace and quiet, but where you probably won’t end up needing a rescue party unless something does go drastically wrong.

Our best advice for wild campers to be, is to get out there and find the spots yourself. They’re there for the taking, just remember to be responsible about it, ok?

Please share your UK wild camping sites on our message board.

Any camping trip is a good camping trip, in our opinion, and there’s plenty to do and see close to home, from exploring the coast, to the Scottish highlands and the Lake District.

But, have you ever thought about taking your tent and hopping on board the Eurostar, or taking a quick flight over to continental Europe? It’s not all hotels and hostels, you know. Camping culture is alive and well all over Europe, and many places, thriving.

Alright, you might be thinking that camping is supposed to be cheap. And you’d be right. Camping is supposed to be cheap, and minus the price of fuel and food, if you’re heading out to go camping closer to home, then your wild camping adventure is likely to be more or less free.

Take a minute, though, and consider Camping in Europe for your next trip. There’s no reason not to, when you think that the average cost of a return flight to Spain, France, Germany or Italy is usually less than £150, if you buy in advance. Not only that, if you’re not the type who typically enjoys camping, but you’re starting to warm to it, then tempering your trip with some warmer weather and different scenery, could be just the thing to get you back into the groove, that’ll have you pitching up at every opportunity.

Camping in Europe

Camping in Europe is a completely different experience to camping at home, too — in a good way. Camping in the UK, beautiful as it is, can sometimes still feel a little quaint, a little antiquated. It’s what you did with your parents when you were a kid, and for some of you, maybe that boredom doesn’t bring back the best of memories. But now you’re a grown up! Now you can do whatever you like, and if camping close to home isn’t really your thing, but you’re looking for a new experience, a newer, cheaper way to travel with absolute freedom, then taking your gear and heading out for one of the countries we’re going to cover here, could be the way forward.

In our 101 basics guide to camping in Europe, we’ll be covering four of our favourite countries for camping and wild camping away from home. We’ll be looking at France, known for its stunning countryside and long walks; Germany, which comes with some surprising views and wonderful forest; Italy, with its fine weather and beautiful walks, and Spain, whose personality and charm will surprise you, if you’re not familiar with the country outside of the hotel walls.

First, though, let’s take a look at a few of the things you’re going to need, to make sure your European camping trip is a success.

Essential Equipment For Camping in Europe

Buy a Windproof Tent

This is something that we’ve mentioned before in our posts focused specifically on wild camping, but it’s incredibly important to have a decent tent (a windproof one) when you’re heading out to go camping far away from home.

It’s a lot easier when you’re in the UK, if the weather turns nasty, to pack up and head home. Abroad, you’re a little more committed to staying put, and while the weather away from the UK can be a little kinder, there’s still potential for it to turn sour, so it’s best to be prepared.

Check out our Camping Things guide to buying the best tent.

Take a Large Rucksack

You might need to pay the extra baggage fee to get your stuff over on the plane, but if you can take just one pack, with space to attach your sleeping bag, you’ll be in a much more convenient space when it comes to hauling everything around, setting up and packing away at your campsite.

We’ve reviewed plenty of backpacks and rucksacks, and you can check out our choices here.

Get a BioLite Burner

We’re absolutely in love with BioLite burners, and camping abroad presents the perfect opportunity to use one. There’s no way you’re getting a gas canister flown over to wherever you’re going, and starting an open fire on an unfamiliar campground is likely to be looked upon very unfavourably.

With a BioLite burner, all you’re taking is a container — albeit one with a totally cool wood-to-electricity charging cell on the side. You’ll fill it with biomass fuels such as leaves, wood and grass once you’re there. Eco friendly and safe.

Check out Camping Things reviews of the best BioLite burners here.

Invest in a GPS Guidance Device

If you’re staying at a designated camping site, then having a GPS navigation device probably isn’t entirely necessary, but, if you’re wild camping in Europe, or you’re going to be hiking a fair amount, then knowing where you’re going, where the best spots are, and how to get back to your tent safely, should be top of your list of priorities. This goes for camping anywhere, but its especially true if you’re taking the tent and the crew on the road in another country.

We’re partial to a high-end navigation device, one that’ll always be up to date, and which can stand up to the often rough and tumble nature of wild camping. Check out our picks of the best GPS and navigation devices on the Camping Things site.

We’ll get into a few of our top tips for camping outside of the UK very soon, but for now, let’s take a look at some of the best places to visit in our chosen countries — France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

FRANCE: Rural Beauty to the Sunny Med

The closest neighbour on our list, France might surprise you with how varied it is when it comes to camping options. It’s a pretty big country, and if you’re looking for somewhere to pitch up among the meadows and countryside, then the heart of France is going to be ideal for you and your family or friends.

Alternatively, if what you’re after is sunshine, sea and somewhere to lay your beach towel, then the South of France, with access to the beautiful Mediterranean Sea is where you need to be heading.

One of the coolest things about camping in France, as with any of the choices on our list, is the journey itself. Driving through France to reach your campsite is going to be an experience to remember, one packed with so much gorgeous scenery, you’ll be spoilt for choice about where you should finally stop and pitch up.

Where to camp in France

NORTH

If your preference is to stay closer to the UK because you’re not feeling like driving too far, then the north of France has some fantastic spots to pitch up. L’Anse du Brick is one of the most northerly campsites in France, and sits right on the water’s edge. Check out Bel Sito a little further down the coast, and you’ll be on the mainland, situated midway between the islands of Guernsey and Jersey.

Journey a little further down, still in the far north of France and inland a little, and you’ll find the Chateau de Martragny, which is a lovely — if a little fancy for the wild camper’s taste — place to spend a few days.

Move over to the other side of France, closer to Belgium, and you’ll find Etangs du Moulin, a wonderfully entertaining taste of the old west in rural France.

CAPITAL

Indigo Paris Bois Boulogne is the place to go if you’re flying into the capital and don’t feel like straying too far. This popular site is great for campers of all ages and experiences, although if you’re looking for a wild camping adventure, you’re not going to find it here.

Huttopia Rambouillet in Versailles is a forest site that welcomes families, caravans and wild campers, and while it’s close to the capital, it certainly feels like you’re out and away from the stress of modern life. Also on the border between Versailles and the capital is Huttopia Versailles. A similar setup to the one we’ve just mentioned, only a little closer to Paris.

CENTRAL

Taking things a little further south, you might find yourself pitching up in La Foret du Morvan, a spellbinding forest campsite that’s wonderful for families. In the middle of the nowhere, pretty much right bang in the middle of the country, there’s Domaine La Mathoniere, which is nothing short of an idyllic getaway for campers looking for some peace and quiet.

Head over to the west coast and you’ll find Le Verger, which is a perfect little spot for a quiet getaway with the family. Nothing too fancy here, just a lovely, nature-friendly space to pitch your tent.

SOUTH

Now we’re starting to talk about some seriously warm weather, and if you’re into wild camping, then the south is a great place to go exploring. Let’s start all the way down on the Spanish border at Mas de la Fargassa, a sultry, sun-baked campsite that doesn’t care whether you’re pitching a tent, or sleeping in a caravan, as long as you’re chill about it.

Moving up the coast, check out Brec in the maritime French alps. Stunning scenery, and a lakeside beach. Last but not least, moving back up a little, we’ve got to mention Les Olivettes, a great place to relax, right on the edge of a national park.

SPAIN: Coastal Camping and Lots of Sun

Now, we’re going stick to the coast for much of our little tour of Spain, because honestly, while there’s plenty to do and see if you’re a wild camper trekking through the middle of the country, we think that the most restorative experiences are to be had, relaxing along the sunny Spanish coastline.

NORTH

If the north of Spain is where your heart is leading you, then there’s plenty to see and do around some of the country’s greenest areas. The forests around Bilbao are lovely, and over to the coast at Islas Cies, you’ll find a remote getaway that does not cater for cars or campervans. Perfect if you’re into wild camping.

At Playa de Tauran, you’ll get clifftop views of the Bay of Biscay, and enough remoteness to finally hear yourself think for a change.

EAST

Head on over to the east coast around Barcelona, and you’ll run into Cala Llevado if you go up just a touch. This great coastal camping spot is a cool place to set up camp, and you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches.

There are other campsites dotted around the east coastline of Spain, including a few that are bit more inland, but if you’re happy to pitch up outside of a designated camping area, then that entire coastline is really up for grabs, as long as you’re sensible.

SOUTH

Down south near to the Sierra Nevada national park, you’ll find a good few official camping sites, which are perfectly legitimate places to set up. If, however, you’d prefer to go it alone, then pitching up among the trees is another way to go.

Head down, all the way down Gibraltar, and if you look hard enough, you’ll find somewhere remote enough to pitch up your tent.

ITALY: Mountains and Sunshine

Wherever you decide to pitch up in Italy, you’re more or less assured a great view and some fabulous weather. Packing up the car and driving down there through France is one option, if you’re up for the ultimate road trip, but flights are just as cheap, and once you’re there, if you’ve followed our advice and taken a large rucksack, you’re free to roam and enjoy what the boot has to offer.

Italy is one of the best on our list for wild camping, and if you’re willing to do a little bit of exploring, then finding your own remote little piece of the country really isn’t too hard. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for some inspiration on where to go, check out these picks.

NORTH

Right on the border with Switzerland, you’ll find Lo Stambecco, which ticks all the boxes for trees, views, clean air and quietness. Seiser Alm is the campsite for wild campers planning on doing some trekking around the Dolomites. You might run into a few other adventurers along the way, but that’s all part of the fun.

At San Biagio you’ll be settled on the edge of Lake Gada, and the smallness of the place is just what the doctor ordered, if getting away from it all is your goal.

CENTRAL

Discover parts of Tuscany the tourists don’t know about at Madonna di Pogi in central Italy. Not far from Provence, this is wine country, and the pace of life here is something to be savoured, we feel.

If you’re up for some island camping, then Stella Mare is a great option. Uneven cliffs and spectacular views await on this tiny island off the west coast.

For the wild campers, central Italy is there for the taking. Head out into the national parks east of Foligno and let your wild side take over.

SOUTH

There are some wonderful national parks around Naples for you to explore, and pitching up a tent for wild camping is generally encouraged, as long as you’re sensible and respectful. Go all the way, way down south, though, to the area around Taranto, and you’ll be far out of the way, that the only thing left to do will be to sit back and enjoy the views.

GERMANY: Traditional Camping and Forest Views

In many ways, the camping in Germany is a lot like it is in the UK. Plenty of open space, lots of greenery and a sense of tradition run through the atmosphere here. What makes Germany different, is its awesome range of forests, valleys and rivers. Sure, we have those, too, but there’s something about hiking through the German woods that ignites a little bit of a different spark somewhere deep inside the adventurer’s soul. Maybe you’ll stumble across some magical little cave, or a tree with a family of elves living in it. Probably not, but you should still get out there.

NORTH

Germany is a big old country, and finding your way around can be a bit daunting if you’re new to camping abroad. Wild camping is very possible if you know where to look, and the areas outside the major cities, like south of Hamburg and Luneburg are a great place to start.

Uhlenkoper is a wonderful ,eco-friendly campsite outside of Luneburg, with great access to the Luneburger Heidi region. Head up further towards Prorow and Zingst, and you’ll find plenty of opportunities for wild camping.

Down a bit more, and you’ll come towards Bergen, where the camping is good if you’re looking for somewhere a little more off the grid. It’s popular enough to be accessible and safe, but you’ll have plenty of room to yourself, too.

SOUTH

The south of Germany is arguably better for camping, with a few more official options when it comes to regulated campsites. Check out Mullerwiese on the doorstep of Germany’s black forest for a real taste of something totally charming. Head down a little further towards Freiburg and you’ll come across Hirzberg Camping, a quaint and traditional camping ground that offers good, honest outdoors and clean air.

Finally, across the other side, take your tent and pitch up somewhere in the Bavarian Forest on the border with the Czech Republic. Not much we can tell you about this area of the world that can’t be bested with a simple Google Image search. Perfection.

Camping in Europe is a safe, fun and exciting way to explore the world a little further away from home. Our advice for getting there, is to keep it as simple as possible. Follow these tips, and you’ll be well on your way to a really memorable time.

Book flights early — The earlier you book, the cheaper it’ll be.

Land at a major city — You probably will anyway.

Hire a car — and drive as close as you can to where you’re planning to stay.

If driving, don’t go alone.

Never go alone anyway.

Make sure your equipment is up to the job.

Learn some helpful phrases and greetings in the native language.

Leave no trace.

Enjoy yourself.

Discover the Best Camping Locations in the UK

In this guide, we’ll explore some of the best camping locations, legal aspects of camping, and even essential gear to make your camping experience unforgettable.

Lake District, England: Nestled in the northwest of England, the Lake District is a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. With its picturesque lakes, rolling hills, and awe-inspiring mountains, it’s no wonder this National Park attracts thousands of campers every year. There are numerous campsites spread across the region, offering different amenities for campers of all types. Whether you prefer wild camping or more organized sites, the Lake District has it all.

Snowdonia National Park, Wales: Wales boasts some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the UK, and Snowdonia National Park stands out as a camper’s paradise. Home to Mount Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales, this park offers a range of camping experiences, from wild camping in the hills to family-friendly campsites in the valleys. Wake up to stunning vistas, explore cascading waterfalls, and hike the numerous trails that weave through the rugged terrain.

Cairngorms National Park, Scotland: For those seeking a true wilderness experience, Cairngorms National Park in Scotland is an ideal destination. As the largest National Park in the UK, it provides ample opportunities for wild camping, allowing you to immerse yourself in the untamed beauty of the Scottish Highlands. However, it’s crucial to adhere to the “Leave No Trace” principles and follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code to protect this fragile ecosystem.

The New Forest, England: Situated in the southern part of England, the New Forest offers a unique camping experience in a protected natural area. This ancient woodland and heathland is home to ponies, deer, and an abundance of wildlife. Campsites here are well-equipped, and the area’s charm lies in its tranquility and diverse landscape, making it a perfect spot for family camping trips.

Isle of Skye, Scotland: The rugged beauty of the Isle of Skye has been captivating travelers for generations. The island is dotted with stunning cliffs, iconic rock formations like the Old Man of Storr, and picturesque landscapes that will leave you in awe. While wild camping is legal in Scotland, remember to camp responsibly and obtain landowner permission when necessary. Several established campsites are available for those seeking more amenities.

Legal Aspects of Camping in the UK: While camping is allowed across most parts of the UK, there are certain regulations to keep in mind. “Wild camping,” which means setting up camp in the open countryside, is permitted in Scotland and some parts of Dartmoor in England. However, in other areas of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, you’ll need to seek permission from the landowner or use designated campsites.

Essential Gear for Camping: Before you embark on your camping adventure, make sure you have the right gear to ensure a comfortable and safe experience. A well-fitted backpack, like the ones featured in CampingThings’ guide on “Choosing the right backpack,” is essential for carrying your camping essentials. Additionally, invest in a high-quality tent, such as those mentioned in the “Choosing the right tent” guide, to shield you from the elements.

Having a reliable camping stove, as suggested in the “Best Camping Stoves” guide, is crucial for cooking delicious meals in the great outdoors. Don’t forget to pack a durable headlamp from the “Top 5 Best Head Lights” guide to illuminate your way during evening adventures. Lastly, stay charged and connected with a reliable portable battery power bank from the “Best Portable Battery Power” guide.

In conclusion, the UK offers a wealth of camping experiences for nature enthusiasts, ranging from breathtaking mountain landscapes to serene coastal regions. With a variety of camping destinations to choose from and an array of outdoor gear available, you’re all set to embark on an unforgettable camping journey in the stunning British countryside.

Essential Equipment

Buy a Windproof Tent

A windproof tent is an absolute must-have, even if you’re taking the RV or camper van. Being protected against the elements is no joke, especially when you’re out in the one of America’s big national parks.

Check out our Camping Things guide to buying the best tent.

Take a Large Rucksack

You’ll be taking a suitcase anyway, probably, so cough up that little bit extra and make sure you’ve got enough room for all of your stuff.

We’ve reviewed plenty of backpacks and rucksacks, and you can check out our choices here.

Get a BioLite Burner

We’re big fans of BioLite burners, which use bio fuel like wood, leaves and twigs to produce both heat and electricity via a built-in charging cell.

With a BioLite burner, all you’re taking is a container — albeit one with a totally cool wood-to-electricity charging cell on the side. No need to worry about carrying fuel, just use what’s around you.

Check out Camping Things reviews of the best BioLite burners here.

Invest in a GPS Guidance Device

Another essential one for making a go of it in the great American wilds. Invest in one that’s up to date, and which won’t let you down.

We’re partial to a high-end navigation device, one that’ll always be up to date, and which can stand up to the often rough and tumble nature of wild camping and Trekking America.

Check out our picks of the best GPS and navigation devices on the Camping Things site.

Where To Go: Our Family Friendly Picks

With regards to where you might like to visit, we’ve kept all of our options kid-friendly. That’s not to say that we’ve left out ones that are for adults only, because to be honest, whether you’re going with kids or not, any of these places is going to make for an incredible experience. We just want to help out those parents who are in need of some inspiration for where to go, but who might be feeling limited by what they can do with the kids.

Yellowstone National Park

Like we said at the start, Yellowstone sits on top of a supervolcano, which is way overdue an eruption. Nobody knows when it’ll go off again, but best guesses don’t put it at any time soon. The some 500 geysers dotted all around Yellowstone attest to the still being active under the surface.

Without a doubt, Yellowstone is one of the most awe-inspiring places on Earth, stretching over an area of almost 9,000 square km. It’s home to some of the oldest, rarest and most precious wildlife in the world, including the great American buffalo, eagles, bison, bears and wolves.

You want waterfalls? Yellowstone has them. You want woods? Yellowstone. Lakes, canyons, rivers and mountains? If you’re looking for a place to see the best of what the planet has to offer, then Yellowstone National Park is one hell of a place to start. Most of the major sites within the park are signposted and have some sort of road leading up to them, so you shouldn’t get too lost following them. Belgrade, Montana; Jackson Hole, Wyoming, or Salt Lake City are your best bets for flying in. If in doubt, contact a park ranger, who will be happy to tell you what’s up and where to go.

Yosemite National Park

Home of the world’s biggest standing of giant sequoia trees, Yosemite is wild California at its greatest. A favourite of photographer Ansel Adams, Yosemite is cut with humongous valleys of rock, which tower on either side with sharp, vertical cliff faces, delving into lush forest.

In terms of wildlife, you’ll find bears, wolves, eagles and all sorts of other American icons. One of the major attractions of Yosemite National Park, is the giant sequoia trees, which can grow up to several hundred feet tall, and be centuries old. One of the largest in the area is named Grizzly Giant, and stands over 200ft.

The best time to visit Yosemite is the spring or fall, when the scenery is at its best. Fly into Sacramento, and you’ll have a lovely three-hour drive into the park.

Smoky Mountains National Park

A great one for the kids, taking the camper van up the Little River Road up by the Sugarlands Visitor Center, you might come across coyotes, wild boar and wild turkeys. And, with over 100 species of trees lining the mountains on your drive, this wonderful national park is one of the most beautiful drives imaginable, and a great place to go hiking and camping.

Grand Canyon National Park

What do we really need to tell you about the Grand Canyon? You’ve seen it plenty of times in photos, documentaries and movies, but have you ever considered how freaking large this place really is? 18 miles wide and over 270 miles long, the Grand Canyon was carved by the Colorado River, and runs through the state of Arizona.

Just back up a second and think about that width — 18 miles. You can stand on one side of the canyon, and not be able to see the other side. When you consider that you’re looking into a valley carved by nothing but water, how can you not be blown away? Trekking in the Grand Canyon is a fantastic way to see the place, but if you’re going to be camping, then you’ll need to seek permission from the authorities.

There are plenty of tour operators who can take you to the Grand Canyon, with regular pick-ups most days throughout the year. Flying into Las Vegas will be your best option for getting there.

Monument Valley, Arizona

Perhaps not one for the kids, but the quintessential American West, as you probably think of it. Quintessential, though, is not the right way to describe this towering valley, set into the red sand desert of Arizona. There isn’t much in the way of cover or tourist information points around the valley, and rightly so, this is straight up Trekking America desert heartland, untamed and massive.

You can access the valley by driving up Route 163, and the hiking options are pretty obvious once you arrive amongst the towering rock formations.

Some General Tips For Trekking and Wild Camping

Some of what you’ve learned while wild camping and trekking closer to home will translate into your trip to the States, but bear in mind that you’re going somewhere much bigger, where help can be much further away, and with that in mind, we’ve got a few pieces of advice to help keep you safe on your travels.

Never go alone — wild camping and Trekking America in the open is never a good idea. Please take someone with you.

Always get the contact details of a ranger or local authority.

Always Check that you have permission to travel through or set up camp on the land you’re on.

Leave no trace — Don’t burn the ground, don’t litter and try not to disturb anyone or any wildlife.

Do not interact with the wildlife — If you can help it. Leave them be as much as possible, and never approach wild animals.

Enjoy yourself.

Trekking America

From way out west, where the California gold rush began, to Niagara Falls in the east, there’s so much in between to get you fired up about really enjoying the great outdoors and trekking America. Some of the most stunning, monumentally huge, wild views exist in the heart of the American continent, and if you’re used to wild camping out in the wilds of the UK or Europe, then we’d bet that you’re going to be blown away by what’s waiting for you across the Atlantic.

Colossal mountain ranges, sweeping valleys and the endless seas of trees that have inspired explorers for generations, and which have been captured in magnificent detail by photographers like Ansel Adams, in many ways still defy the nature of humans to try and conquer. You’ll see impact craters from giant meteorites, snow-capped mountains, and valleys forged by millions of years of ferocious weather, and the more subtle wearing of slow moving rivers.

If you want to get away from everything, to feel truly small, but in many ways blessed to be able to witness such awesome sights, then wild camping and trekking America, while expensive in the first instance, just to get to, is one experience which, given the opportunity, must not be passed up. In this latest guide from the team at Camping Things, we’ll be taking a look at some of the most epic journeys you can take as a wild camper or trekker, right into the American heartland. Among others, we’ll be talking about: The Grand Canyon National Park, Yosemite National Park, Monument Valley Arizona, and the infamous Yellowstone National Park, which for years has been threatening to blow us all into another ice age, thanks to a giant volcano bubbling away underneath its surface. All the more reason, we think, to get out and see all of this stuff while you still can. If that thing goes off tomorrow, then at least you’ll go down with a hell of a view to remember.

Don’t forget to check out our tips and hints throughout the article, where we’ll be giving advice on the best equipment to take with you, and how to stay safe when wild camping and Trekking America.

The Cost of Wild Camping and Trekking America

Alright, let’s talk about cost for a minute. Camping, wild camping, trekking, it’s supposed to be cheap, right? That’s the whole point. You drive to where you want to go, trek for awhile, then pitch your tent, the only cost being that of your fuel and whatever food you choose to bring. That’s for going out closer to home. Even in Europe, you can get over to France, Spain, Germany or Italy for a couple of hundred pounds, then have yourself a jolly good week or just a few days without spending that much more.

The Americas, though, this is where it gets a little pricey. But, think of it as a once in a lifetime experience. You’re going to heading over the ocean, to journey way, way far inland to a place relatively untouched by humans, a place where everything around you is big on a scale that’s beyond imagination until you’ve seen it. Travelling to America to start your trip of all trips, your wild camping adventure, isn’t going to be cheap, but it will be worth it.

You can expect to pay anywhere between £400 and £1,200 for your return flight tickets, depending on when you choose to go. Most likely, you’re not going to want to go when the weather is at its worst, around winter time. It isn’t just because it’s cold, either; when you’re out in the middle of the great, wild outdoors of America, there’s very little in the way of respite or protection, so unless your gear is really up to scratch, you’re going to find yourself in more of a battle, than an adventure. Likewise with the height of summer. Great for views, not so good for the scorching heat and high prices. Try and strike a balance between a comfortable time of year, and a good price. Anything in the region of £600-800 is reasonable.

Think About Hiring An RV or Camper Van

Once you’re there, and you’re ready for your North American camping adventure trip to start, how do you go about getting to the place where you’ll be spending most of your time? There are a few options, and while renting a car for the most epic road trip is a cool way to do it, we actually prefer the use of an RV, or Recreational Vehicle, or a camper van. You could also take a coach to the nearest drop-off point and go it alone from there, but America is a damn big place, and while wild camping in the wilds of North America might sound like a fun adventure, it’s actually not the most efficient thing to do, to be waiting for coaches and walking or hiking from place to place. That’s not to say that trekking America is out of the question, but for getting yourself to where you need to be, it pays to have the convenience and the safety or an RV or camper van nearby.

You’re not heading out in search of new ground, or to make the record books, you’re just there to have the best possible time. You’ve spent a lot of money getting over there, so make life that little bit easier for yourself, and hire an RV or a camper van to drive to where you need to be. It’s a great way to see the sights, and if you want to camp out under the stars, then you can always take your tent along and pitch up. Just remember to lock up and keep the keys on you, not in the van. Wouldn’t want to end up in your own special horror movie when someone comes along and steals your wheels.

Generally, the price of a camper van is going to be lower than the price of an RV when you’re renting, but just check with the nearest place, or, if you are going to make this into a road trip, then shop around and hire yourself something that you can keep for a few days then return. You really are heading out into some pretty wild country, so in one sense, be careful, but in another, enjoy the freedom, because there’s no feeling in the world like having made it across the water in one piece, to then be driving through some of the greatest scenery on the planet.

The Legality of Wild Camping in America

Wild and open as it is, you’d be surprised by how much of that great American heartland is tightly regulated by some agency or other. A lot of land that we’re talking about here, belongs to either some government organization, a national forestry commission, or else a Native American reservation. Just because there’s not much around, doesn’t mean nobody owns or regulates the land, and if you’re camping somewhere you shouldn’t be, then don’t be surprised if you’re told to pack up and move out in a hurry.

Camping on private land is definitely a no-no, and you wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of a unwelcome party if you’re found camping illegally on land owned by someone.

How will you know where is ok to camp? Usually, more often than not, the areas you’re entering will be signposted as being part of some organization or reservation’s property. You must seek permission from that authority if you’re planning on staying there. Another helpful way to find out what the land you’re on is all about, and who it belongs to, is to look into guides like the DeLorme Atlas and Gazetter.

Staycation time

We go on all the time here at Camping Things about how easy it is to get away for the weekend, somewhere abroad. It’s cheap, the weather is usually better, and with ultra light, portable tents being so affordable, it makes it easy to pick up your stuff, get on a plane and set up camp in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, even Scandinavia.

But what about staying closer to home? Do you really need to get way, way out into the wilderness to have a good time? We don’t think so.

The staycation (stay at home vacation) is one of the easiest, cheapest ways to give you and your loved ones some rest and relaxation, without having to worry about passports, currency exchange, or learning another language. It’s economical, and good for the economy, and if you’re looking for a way to recapture the magic of adventuring as a child, then finding your own way through the woods and backcountry, could put you in touch with the little explorer you used to be. Plus, if you have your own little explorers now, then taking them on their first camping trip, knowing what you know now about how to make the experience fun and interesting for them, can be a fantastic way of introducing them to some of the finer things in life.

Most of us went camping with our parents when we were kids, right? Some of us have fonder memories of it than others do, but it stays with you, and you’re always glad that you can at least say that you’ve tried it. Especially if you have kids, but even if you don’t, getting back out into the natural world is so great for lifting your mood, recharging your batteries, and for getting the creative juices flowing. In this post, we want to talk about not just the appeal of the camping staycation, but also of camping itself. Why go camping? Why choose it over a hotel or AirBnB holiday? We’ll also cover glamping (glamour-camping) for those of you who are up for something, but not quite convinced that a full on, backwoods, sleeping on the ground, building a campfire and eating beans from the can holiday is what you’re really looking for.

What is a Staycation?

Just like any holiday, a staycation is meant to get you away from your daily routine, to give you a chance to recharge, and to enjoy the company of the people you choose to spend your time with. Essentially, a staycation is any trip you take away from home, with the intention of relaxing for a couple of days or more. Stay just a single day and it’s often referred to a daycation — we could go on, too. How about holistay?

What is there to do on a staycation?

The country is your oyster here. The point of a staycation is to treat your local area, or wherever you’re going, as a tourist attraction. Be a stranger close to home, and enjoy the sights and attractions you might never have considered before, just because you live so close to them.

There are loads of great forests and woodland trails all over the country — the Forestry Commission has mapped almost all of them for you, making it easy to pick one near to you, or one a little further afield, if that’s what you’re after. Pack a tent, some food and comfortable walking shoes, and take yourself and the kids off hiking for the day, sleeping out under the stars and returning the next day, refreshed, and with a renewed appreciation for each other.

It’s not all about hiking and climbing, though. All you really need to do, is pick somewhere that seems good to you, go there, then find out what’s good nearby. Local parks and sights, historic monuments and shows, whether you’re in or out of the city (although we hope that you’re out), you’ll find plenty to do on a well-planned staycation.

Are there any risks to staycationing?

The reason we love the staycation is that you can do it on impulse, and it’s cheap. You don’t need to go very far from home to find some beautiful wilderness to set up camp in, but there is a caution to be heeded here, in that if you’re close to home, you might be tempted to pop into work should the need arise. Similarly, if your boss knows that you’re on holiday, but that you’re local, or at least still in the country, they might be tempted to give you a call, because you know, you’re not really on holiday, are you? You didn’t even leave the country.

Likewise with the emails, you’re going to be checking them all the time if you’re on your regular data plan, or worse, if there’s access to free WiFi. So yes, there are risks to staycationing, and it’s going to require a lot more willpower on your part, to stay out of and away from the things you’re on holiday to avoid.

Museums and local festivals should also be top of your list of things to do while on staycation. If you’ve made the effort to drive or take the train to somewhere other than your own town, if you’ve forgone your usual holiday to another country, then it’s essential that you take advantage of everything your chosen spot has to offer.

You can make sure that you stick to your plan of ‘no television and no email’ by turning off your phone during the day while you’re out and out doing your thing. It’s incredible how much less likely you are to be constantly checking your phone, if you have to turn it on and wait for it every single time.

What about the cost of a staycation?

Consider the cost of a five day holiday to France. We’ve broken it down here so that you can compare the average cost of that, with what it might set you back to do the same holiday as a staycation.

Who: You’re two adults with two children, 6 and 9.

When: Let’s assume you’re waiting for the weather to get lovely and warm, so that your staycation doesn’t feel like a dreary acceptance that you have no money. So you’re going in June, let’s say early to mid-June.

Where: South of France is always a great shout, so let’s say you’re going to Nice.

How much does it cost?

Based on two adults and two children, we’ve calculated that your flights are going to cost around £200 for all four of you, if you book several months in advance. Not bad at all, but what about accommodation?

We’re taking the AirBnB approach, and going with a conservative estimate, based on the average price of a place per night, that’ll accommodate two adults with two children, you’re looking at around £250.

Then there’s food, and while there are supermarkets all over Nice, and plenty of outstanding restaurants, the city is not really known for its cheap street food. Add on another £200-250 for the five days you’re there, and add on £100 for the baggage you’re taking with you on the plane. Altogether, that five-day holiday to Nice in the south of France with your two kids, has cost you around £800. And, ok, for a family of four to visit one of Europe’s finest, most beautiful areas, really isn’t too bad, but what about if money is tight? You still work hard, and you still deserve a holiday, so how much can you do a staycation for?

Let’s take that same setup and place your family of four in Cambridge. You’ve got a few options of where you can go on your staycation, including out East to the Norfolk or Essex coast, or down south past London and into the South Downs. Alternatively, you could head north into the Lake District, or go all the way and head up into the Scottish Highlands. Let’s take a look at the cost.

At just over 230 miles, the journey from Cambridge to the Lake District would cost approximately £30 in petrol (one way). For your accommodation, you can get a lovely bed and breakfast room for around £35-40 night, which brings the total so far to around £230. Bring plenty of food with you, and eat out a couple of nights at some of the local restaurants, and you’ll spend under £100. There are no baggage charges to add on, and no flights.

Altogether, this trip is going to cost you around £360. Not bad at all, and if you’re considering going further afield into Scotland, then the only difference is going to be a little higher cost on the petrol.

Take the trip up to any of these places and camp there instead of renting a room, and you’ll slash the overall cost down to next to nothing.

What other options to I have? What about Glamping?

Yes, glamping, it was only a matter of time before someone had that bright idea, and while the idea might make you wince or roll your eyes, glamping probably isn’t what you think. In some way it is, it’s getting outdoors without having to slum it on the ground in a leaky tent, but in another way, it’s a different type of experience altogether.

The many options available for glamping make it an attractive option for those who might not want to spend money on flights and hotels, or who just feel like staying closer to home. A glamping vacation is exciting, and because you’re going somewhere where a certain level of luxury is expected, then the surrounding area is pretty much guaranteed to be worth looking at and exploring.

Some of the best glamping experiences can be had in cabins and treehouses, and trust us, staying in a purpose-built treehouse for the weekend is so much fun, once you’ve done it, you’ll be itching to go back and try it again. There are also yurts (we’ll explain) to stay in, which offer an entirely different experience in themselves.

Let’s start with treehouse glamping, since that’s where we’re most often drawn, and with good reason. Built into the heart of some of the country’s most stunning woodland, these wonderful treehouses can be as basic as they can be luxurious. Some are fitted with hot tubs for the ultimate luxury outdoor experience, but very few have WiFi access (and rightly so, we think.)

Canopy Stars has a great range of treehouses to choose from, but book way in advance, because there are scarce few treehouses, and a lot of people wanting to stay in them.

Where can you find these treehouses?

You’ll find something in almost every major forest area of the UK. Best to go with a registered, reputable company, though, and not some creeper who says it’s fine if you use his treehouse for the weekend, as long as you don’t mind him and his buddies dropping by.

Sherwood Forest is great for treehouse glamping, as are area of the Peak District, Lakes and Wales. Naturally, you’ll want to stick to the spring and summer months, when the light pouring through the forest is inviting enough to draw you out of the hot tub for a little bit of exploration.

Our best kept secret is the living-room treehouse experience in deepest Wales there really is no competition, you’ll need to book a year in advance

What on Earth is a Yurt?

A traditional Mongolian Yurt is essential a large tent, usually covered with animal skins, but commonly covered with some sort of synthetic fabric if you’re in the UK. They’re popular with the glamping crowd because of their size, and how they offer a combination of light, airy tent, and the comforts of a regular hotel room.

Inside a standard yurt, you’re likely to find a bed, some sort of fireplace, maybe a few rugs, some chairs, a sofa, and so on. Really fancy yurts will have some sort of plumbing system built into them, too, so that you can wash and do your business without having to risk the on-site toilet facilities, or the nettles in the nearby woods.

It’s not permitted to start a fire inside your yurt, but most will be fitted with a stove, woodburner or some other kind of indoor cooking grill.

Staycationing and glamping are good for the economy

Aside from the cost of petrol, if you’re visiting your local area, or somewhere further afield, and you’re eating out at local restaurants and supporting bed and breakfast establishments, then you can staycation safe in the knowledge that you’re also contributing to the UK economy by investing in the people and businesses who provide comfortable access to our most beautiful areas of natural significance.

Even if you choose to go glamping, in either a treehouse retreat or a yurt, most of the companies running these things are privately owned, most by UK residents. Support them, and have the time of your life, living out the childhood dream of staying in a treehouse for the weekend, and it really is an everybody wins kind of deal.

We’re partial to the treehouse holidays, because they put you right in the thick of it, literally, and sleeping with the windows open in the middle of the forest is an experience you’ll never forget. If you struggle to sleep well while you’re on holiday, then a treehouse retreat is highly recommended. You’ll be drifting off in no time, surrounded by the sounds of swaying trees and passing wildlife.

Wherever you choose to go, whether it’s up north to the wild highlands of Scotland, or east to the windy coast, or maybe down south to the Olde English woods for a taste of what life was like back in the day, we’re sure you’ll find something to love on a staycation.

The key things to take away from this, are that you really don’t need to go stray too far from home to have a truly memorable experience with the people you love. You could be doing this as early as next weekend if you get on it right now, and think about how you’re going to feel during, when you’re sinking into that hot tub, surrounded by friends and family. It’s within your reach, and it really doesn’t need to cost the earth.

They’re really missing out, in our honest opinion, but in another way, it makes it all the more special for the rest of us, who do find ourselves standing at the foot of some massive, dormant volcano, or paddling a canoe through a valley so deep, you might be forgiven for thinking that you’d left the modern world behind entirely and that a Viking war ship might round the bend at any minute.

Camping in Scandinavia

The Nordics and Scandinavia are beautiful, more than beautiful, breathtaking in their openness, clarity and ability to make you feel so damn small. And that’s a good thing, because when you get out there, when you realise your true place in the grand scheme, it makes it very easy to sit back, relax and allow the icy waters to carry you wherever they were planning on going.

Adhering to a strict, but scout’s honour code of ‘leave no trace’, the rules of wild camping in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, are a little more relaxed than they are in the United Kingdom, although you’ll still need to be careful not to camp too close to any paths. Respect the signage, and never camp on someone’s land without seeking permission first. We’ll go into the dos and don’ts of wild camping in Scandinavia in a bit, but for now, let’s take a look at why in the world you’d want to go wild camping in the first place, especially in bunch of countries known for their brutal cold weather.

Why Go Wild Camping in Scandinavia in the First Place?

Times right now aren’t as bad financially as they were during the recent recession, and people can afford to fly to places, and maybe stay in a decent enough hotel, or at least a hostel. But, with the rise of eco-tourism, choosing to leave as small of a trace as possible during a getaway has become somewhat of a trend. Whether it’s down to testing yourself against the elements, or it’s born from a genuine want to explore, but to still minimise impact on the environment, wild camping is a great way of seeing the outdoors, with the freedom to come and go as you please. It’s free, both in terms of what it costs to pitch up (which is nothing), and in terms of freedom, and where you can go, where you can set up camp for the night.

In the Nordics and Scandinavia, in the wilds of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland, it’s generally, if informally encouraged to set up camp along your route, and as long as you’re respectful of the environment, you’ll have virtually nobody to come and tell you that it’s time to be moving on.

Wild camping is the perfect way to experience the real essence of camping, and wild camping in Scandinavia in the far north provides the ideal opportunity to test out all of the new equipment you’ve got. How warm actually is that expensive sleeping bag?

There is, by the way, nothing wrong at all with staying in a hotel or hostel in any of the countries we’re talking about. The facilities are usually always of a high standard, and in our experience, the people we’ve met have always been incredibly helpful and kind. That said, we’re always going to prefer to take our gear on the trail, and to set up camp somewhere in the view of a towering mountain, waterfall, valley or woodland. And, with that in mind, before we dive into what each of the Nordic and Scandinavian countries has to offer the eager ecotourist on the lookout for adventure, here are Camping Things’ top 10 tips for wild camping:

Top 10 Tips for Wild Camping in Scandinavia

Bring plenty of layers

Get a windproof tent and layer up
The last thing you want when pitching your tent and climbing inside for the night, is to realise that it doesn’t keep the wind out. There’s nothing worse than trying to catch some sleep while being slowly frozen by an arctic chill. To the same end, it pays to layer up. Most good hiking gear these days comes with technology that allows sweat to wick away, while retaining body heat. The more advanced layers you can pile on, the less likely it is that heat will escape.

Cook using biofuel
Our favourite way to cook outdoors by far, is with biofuel, which is the fancy name for wood, twigs and leaves. Check out our guide to BioLite burners on Camping Things.

Don’t stray too far
We’re talking about wild camping, but parts of the frozen north really are pretty wild, and if you’re at all inexperienced with being in the real great outdoors, you could find yourself in a bit of a spot if the weather turns, or your get injured.

Talk to the locals
Learn a few phrases, simple greetings, easy questions, directions and how to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. If you’re near any of the towns and cities, chances are someone speaks English, but it’s always polite to start the conversation in the native tongue.

Be considerate
This one’s a no-brainer, but always be mindful of who and what is around you when you’re out wild camping. Other people are there for exactly the same reasons as you are, and they won’t appreciate having to walk around your campsite to get to where they’re going. It’s probably best to avoid loud and rawkus parties, too, not just because you might disturb other campers, but there’s a lot of wildlife out there that you don’t know about.

Starting open fires
Generally, it’s best to avoid starting open fires if you have the means to heat with a bio burner, but, if you are going to start a fire, make sure it doesn’t spread, and minimise the damage it does.

Bring a good torch
Its dark out there and during the winter months there can be as little as three hours of sunlight, conversely in the summer it can be light all day. Be prepared Camping Things has reviewed a good selection of lights, and lanterns

Leave no trace
The ‘leave no trace’ motto is one we should all adhere to. It’s pretty simple, just leave as little a trace as possible of you ever having been there.

Enjoy the views
That’s what you’re there for.

What the Nordics and Scandinavia Have to Offer

Honestly, even around the major cities of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland, it’s easy to see why these are considered some of the most jaw-dropping areas of natural beauty the planet has to offer. Wide open spaces, towering mountains and valleys forged by millions of years of clear, running glacial water, there’s nothing more refreshing than the purity of being outside with everything right there for you to explore. We recommend flying to a major city, or to some smaller town with an airport, and then getting hold of a car to make your journey into the wild. Leave the car somewhere safe, then head off, making sure to tell someone who can help, where you’re going.

Which should you choose? You’re assured an awesome time whichever one of these you pick, and our list is in no particular order.

Wild Camping in Finland

Without doubt, Finland is the least explored of the countries in our selection, but year-round, it provides some of the most stunning sites and opportunities for wild camping. Plenty of open space, and land which is highly respected by the Finns, make this an incredibly wild and exciting place to explore.

If you’re not familiar with wild camping, Finland is both a great place to get stuck in, and a huge challenge. You’ll find few of the comforts you might expect from many other ‘wild’ camping trails. In Finland, you’re very much on your own, which is great if you know what you’re doing.

In our opinion, the winter time is the best time to see Finland in all its glory, but like all of the other countries listed here, Finland is beautiful year-round, and is a completely different experience in the spring and summer.

Get out there, and you could be in for a treat, too, in the hypnotising shapes of the Northern Lights. Not as bright in Finland as they are in Norway or Iceland, but still plenty visible from most of the remoter places in the country.

Wild Camping in Sweden

With over 97,000 lakes, as well as mountains, valleys and great, untouched expanses, there’s more to Sweden than Ikea. Probably one of the more touristy of the Scandinavian countries, but without losing its wilderness, Sweden is great for cycling, hiking, camping and wild camping.

Speaking of wild camping, Sweden generally adheres to the idea of ‘Every Man’s Right’, which gives all wild campers the right to go and do as they please, as long as they’re not damaging the environment, interfering with anyone else’s good time, or trespassing on someone’s land. There’s a great feeling of freedom and relaxation to wild camping and hiking in Sweden. The people who make the effort to go there, are there because they’re looking for a real outdoors experience, and if you’re planning on joining them, it pays to bear in mind that acting like a responsible adult is a must. That said, trying to contain yourself when you see the sights Sweden has to offer is a big ask.

Wild camping in Sweden is an experience not to be passed up if you have the opportunity. You don’t need to stray too far from the big cities, either. Some major tour operators will even get you where you need to be, and then leave you to it, so that you can go off and explore on your own.

Wild Camping in Norway

What would you like to do today? That’s the question you’re likely to be asking each other once you arrive on the scene in the wilds of Norway. Fishing, kayaking, horse riding, whatever you feel like doing, even if you are wild camping, the amenities to try all of these cool activities are just a stone’s throw from some of the most popular wild camping areas the country has to offer.

Kayaking is highly recommended, as it’ll give you the opportunity to see the country from a totally cool angle. As you cruise down through one of Norway’s many valleys, you’ll be looking at some of the wildest scenery on the planet, with mountains and fjords on all sides, there’s always something to captivate and amaze.

Wild camping in Norway is encouraged, too, with hikers welcome to set up pretty much anywhere, as long as they’re responsible. If you’re planning on staying longer than 24 hours, and you know that you’re on someone’s land (unlikely, but check), then see if you can get permission.

Wild Camping in Iceland

The flight time is a little longer, but man is it worth it. Iceland might be our favourite of the Nordic countries for both sights and wild camping. The best way to see Iceland is via car. Simply hire one and take the main road out of Reykjavik, following it either to the south coast, or our towards the peninsula, where you’ll find villages dotted along the way, as well a landscape which looks positively alien.

Always be sure to tell your tour guide, someone in town, or friends where you’re going, which direction and where you’re planning to stop, and then just relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Iceland.

Iceland is another one of those countries which offers a totally different experience, depending on whether you choose to go there in the summer or the winter. In the summer, the surrounding expanses are covered in earthy tones and the open air is never scorchingly hot, but it does get pleasantly warm. Summer in Iceland is a great time to go hiking, less perilous on the old slopes, for sure, and if you’re not used to battering winds and brittle cold, then tackling Iceland in the winter as part of your wild camping excursion probably isn’t the wisest idea.

In the winter, as we’ve just mentioned, Iceland is both stunning and brutal. They don’t call Iceland the land of ice and fire for nothing. With plenty of active volcanoes, you’ll see bubbling hot springs all over the place, as well as waterfalls, geysers, and long-dormant, but still formidable volcanoes, which cry out to be climbed.

You don’t need to venture too far from the main road to have a legitimate adventure, either. If you’re not comfortable getting truly lost in the wilderness, there are plenty of opportunities just off the main driving road where you can find solitude and your own piece of the real great outdoors.

Just remember that, as with all the other Nordic and Scandinavian countries, a policy of ‘leave no trace’ is in place, to help preserve the sanctitude and natural beauty of one of the most unspoiled, inhabited islands in the world.

Tips for Seeing the Northern Lights

Seeing the Northern Lights on your wild camping trip up north isn’t a given, but it is entirely possible. You’ll need the right weather conditions to be able to see through the clouds, and you’ll need to be far enough away from the city lights to be able to fully appreciate them.

Even bright camping lights can interfere with your experience, and to give yourself the very best chance of seeing this natural wonder, it’s best to go as far north as possible. Other than that, there’s not much more you can do but turn off the lights, tilt your head up and wait. Nature cares not how far you came to see this, so don’t be sour if you don’t see the lights, but if you do, enjoy every second. Wild camping, of course, is by far the best way to get right out there and see the Northern Lights, and if you want our advice, don’t try taking photos of them. There are plenty online already. Just look up, and enjoy it.

Is It Possible to Go Wild Camping In Scandinavia With a Tour Guide?

Absolutely. We get it, you’re looking for that true outdoor experience, and you’d love to go wild camping on your own, but lack of experience tells you that it’d be a bad idea. That’s smart, and for those of you who are in need of some guidance, tour guided wild camping trips are a fun way of seeing the great outdoors under the watchful eye of an experienced hiker and camper.

Check out sites like Nature Travels for more information on how to get in touch with guided wild camping operators. These guys also have offers running on ice skating, dog sledding and all sorts of other adventure holiday packages.

We’d go so far as to say, that if you’re not an experienced wild camper and hiker, then you’re probably better off going with a guided tour. At least then you’re assured the best sights and some greater measure of safety, as opposed to going it alone.

Wrapping Up: Our Top Tips For Wild Camping in Scandinavia

Always tell someone, ideally someone local, where you’re going and when they should expect you back. Get emergency numbers.

Be wild, but don’t be stupid.

Make sure you pick the appropriate tent for your trip.

Cook using biofuels, and if you’re starting a fire, don’t let it spread.

Finland is less explored by tourists than the other three.

Sweden is your best bet for a more touristy holiday.

Norway offers some of the best sights for fjords and valleys.

Iceland is stunning, but also wild.

Learn some local phrases.

If you’re less experienced, go with a tour operator and be safe.

Enjoy the experience, and if you have the opportunity to take part in some activities like kayaking or climbing, do it. You never know what you might learn about yourself.

With all of that said, can you think of any reason why staying in the UK makes sense now? We love the homeland, but when getting to the Nordics and Scandinavia is so cheap (relatively, anyway), and the cost of wild camping in Scandinavia is low (a bit more if you go with a tour guide), there are plenty of reasons why you should get your layers on and get out there. Spring is coming up, and before you know it, summer will be here, and then the northern territories take on a completely different life, one which is equally mind-blowing.

For more information on the right type of equipment to take on your wild camping trip up north, check out the Camping Things website for our picks of the best tents, lights, biofuel burners and gadgets.

Enjoy the thrill of wild camping in Scandinavia, it really is unique and very special place.
