Size and weight
For all its features, the Kelly Kettle kit isn’t incredibly heavy, weighing in at 2.2kg. At 34cm (13in), the kettle itself is the largest part of the kit, and the whole thing comes in a durable Kelly Kettle branded bag. The main cooking pot has a capacity of around .85L, so not inconsiderable, and fine for the small, but calorie-rich foods you tend to cook when camping.

Materials and build
Often the problem with these multi-sets, is that their creators get so caught up in offering as many components as possible, that quality goes out the window. The Kelly Kettle Company prides itself on quality, and on building stuff that lasts. We certainly believe them, and the stainless steel finish is a real confidence booster. This kit will last for years.

Features
There are novelties with the Kelly Kettle kit, everything works as it should, as you’d expect it to, standing up to harsh conditions, and not bending or flexing like cheaper sets might. The burner is a biomass burner, which is something we love. Burn twigs, wood and pinecones instead of gas or coal. No restrictions on travelling with the Kelly Kettle kit, either.

The durable carry bag opens with a simple drawstring, so you can pack up and pack out quickly and easily. We also love the mouth guards on the cups, which are there to stop you from burning your lips.

This self-contained little wonder is awesome for backpacking and camping, and the price point means it’s totally reasonable for every person in your group to own one. The Isport is built to last, and those folding handles are coated to keep your fingers from getting burnt.

Size and weight

Isport says this stove set is good for two people, but we found that it’s about the right size for one active person on the hiking trail. At 6.3 in x 4.4 in, it’s just big enough to hold a good amount of food and drink, without taking up too much room. And weighing just 386g, it’s no hassle at all to carry.

Materials

Made from high quality aluminium, the Isport Camp Stove Cooking Set is durable and easy to clean, a real contender in this review of cooking sets.

Features

You’ll need to buy the right gas canister to go in the Isport, but other than that, it’s a pretty simple piece of kit. Push the clicker to light the stove, pull out the supports and get heating. There’s a small lever on the side of the stove to adjust the flame.

Lixada Windproof Gas Stove

‘360 degree windproof stove for camping.’

Even the slightest breeze can blow out lesser stoves before they even really get going. The Lixada Windproof Gas Stove is windproof around its entire edge, making it frustration-proof, too. Attaches separately to a gas canister via a flexible hose, and folds up neatly for transportation. It’s bare bones, but it works well and we love it.

Weight and portability
The Lixada does fold up to make it more portable, although it doesn’t flatten like the BushBox does. It’s solid and extremely well made, and at 280 g, it’s capable of holding up 10 kg of weight. Not that you’d load it with that much, it just means that it’s incredibly sturdy.

As with all Lixada products, this one comes in a handy box for storage and transportation.

Materials
Made from stainless steel and copper, runs on butane gas.

Features
The Lixada features a cellular furnace chamber at the top, which helps to release a large amount of heat, evenly, so that you food cooks properly all around. Features three stents (stands), which fold in and out, and they’re really well and sturdy. The Lixada Windproof Gas Stove has a fairly wide base, which is fine once it’s out in the open, and means it provides a solid foundation for pans.

Why we love it
The cellular furnace diffuses the heat evenly but strongly, so that food and liquids heat evenly but efficiently. A great contender to top this portable stoves review.

Petromax Rocket Stove

The Petromax Rocket Stove is one of the pieces of kit that just looks like it belongs outdoors. Solid, with great wooden lifting handles, and a big open space on top for cooking and heating, this stove is one of our favourites. Simply feed wood and other biomass fuel into the Petromax, and using the chimney principle, it’ll heat up quickly and efficiently.

Size and weight
Designed to last a long, long time, the Petromax Rocket Stove is a strong beast, weighing in at 6.5kg. It stands around 33cm tall and around 23cm across, so it’s not huge, but it’s made from steel, iron and wood, so it’s durable enough to withstand regular cooking.

Materials
Made from stainless steel, cast iron (door) and wood (handles).

Features
The Petromax is fairly long, which means there’s a lot of room to draw in oxygen to your fuel. That creates a chimney effect, which means heat is generated quickly and efficiently. The cast iron door opens like a regular wood burner, and a tray slides out, so that you don’t have to burn your hands getting wood in there.

Solid wooden handles on the side make it easy and safe to carry the Petromax around, even while stuff is burning inside.

Fuel
The Petromax Rocket Stove, despite the name, is not intended for petrol. It runs on wood and other biomass.

The BushBox is a customisable, beautiful piece of engineering. Also known as a hobo stove or firebox, the BushBox XL Combination Kit is designed to fold away to under 1 cm in thickness. It assembles with strong, non-stick hinges, and can house either a fuel burner, or other natural fuel sources such as leaves and wood. Space for pans on the top, with the option of a grill plate for cooking meat BBQ style, the BushBox isn’t the cheapest, but it sure is one of the most fun.

Weight and portability
The BushBox XL Combination Kit weighs in at just over 800g, so it’s not the lightest, but it’s made from solid materials, which mean your food is in safe hands on top of it. For its size it is ultra portable, folding down to thinner than 1 cm, inside its own special carrying case.

Measures 12 x 19 cm.

Materials
The BushBox is made from 100% stainless steel, so it’s about as hardy as they come. It comes in a durable carry case, too, so you can slot it into your backpack.

Features
The holed grill plate is so, so good for cooking food directly over the fire. Simply slot it into place and away you go. Comes with supports to rest frying pans on, and because the BushBox houses whatever fuel you’ve got, it’s also great for providing general heat during cold weather camping.

Why we love it
Cooking food on the grill plate directly over the fire is awesome, and the way the BushBox XL Combination Kit packs down so thinly makes it super portable.
